A talented graphic designer with an eye for photography, Laura’s versatility focuses on creating everything from fashion editorial campaigns to full company branding and advertising. Driven by a desire to emphasize artistry and its importance to the world, she found herself engulfed in art, which sparked her initial interest in Graphic Design.

Laura’s a self-taught designer learning from hands on experience. After landing a design position for a promotional items company, she knew she found her true passion. Her desire to grow as an artist prompted her to attend MIU, where she currently pursues classical education in Advertising and Graphic Arts.

Citizen Designer

2014 AIGA Medalist

Harris’ journey began in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. As a young black woman in the South during the 1960s, she experienced desegregation firsthand and, in the process, gained a visceral understanding of how social systems affect people’s daily lives. She cultivated an interest in design while studying with AIGA Medalist Philip B. Meggs at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she received a B.F.A. in 1975. A move to Boston to work with architects and in broadcast media was formative in opening her eyes to the depth and diversity of graphic design practice. At the WGBH design department, Chris Pullman, another AIGA Medalist, became a mentor and catalyst for her enrollment in the master’s program in graphic design at Yale University.

ABOUT THIS VENUE:

About

Our annual three day conference, hosted by AIGA, the Professional Associate for Design, is proud to present the years theme Pioneer Women. The idea behind Pioneer Women is to acknowledge outstanding female designers who have paved the way for emerging young designers through the use of typography, detail and citizen design.

This year our conference takes place in the warm and sunny Copper State. The conference pulls inspiration from the pioneers that passed through this state and those who settled here. We remember the women of the pioneers who helped keep their families and communities together. These tough women paved the way for modern women, just as our keynote speakers paved the way for modern female designers through their work and perseverance. Because of them and so many others, women can finally thrive in the once male-dominated field of Graphic Design.
